Holi is celebrated all over India, but in Braj it feels different. This is the land of Krishna and Radha, and Holi here is not one day of colour but a season of songs, temple celebrations and village traditions. It is joyful, loud and very crowded. A little planning makes the difference between a wonderful trip and an exhausting one.
Why Holi in Braj is special
In Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana and Nandgaon, Holi is tied to the stories of Krishna playing colours with Radha and the gopis. The celebrations begin before the main day and move from place to place.
Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon
The most famous of these is Lathmar Holi, celebrated in Barsana and Nandgaon in the days before Holi. It recalls Krishna and his friends from Nandgaon coming to Barsana to tease Radha and her friends, and the women of Barsana playfully driving them away with sticks (lathis). It is a spectacle, and it draws very large crowds. Read our Barsana and Nandgaon day trip for distances and how to get there.
Temple celebrations in Vrindavan
Vrindavan's temples hold their own Holi celebrations, with colour, flowers, songs and music. The atmosphere in the old town around Banke Bihari can be intense, with tightly packed lanes and colour flying in every direction.
Mathura
In Mathura, the old city, the ghats along the Yamuna and the temples all come alive. Processions and gatherings take place in different parts of the city.
When is Holi?
Holi dates follow the Hindu calendar and change every year. The Braj celebrations, including Lathmar Holi, also move with the calendar. Check the dates for your year well before you book trains and rooms, and confirm event days locally closer to the time, since schedules can shift.
Book early
Holi is one of the two busiest times of the year in Mathura and Vrindavan, along with Janmashtami. Rooms across both towns fill early, and the closer you get to the festival, the fewer good options remain. Prices also go up around festivals. If you know you are coming, book as soon as your dates are fixed.
Where to stay for Holi
The Holi events are spread across Braj: Barsana and Nandgaon to the west, Vrindavan to the north, and the celebrations in Mathura itself. Staying centrally in Mathura makes it easier to reach all of them without changing hotels.
| From Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi to | Distance | Realistic time on a normal day |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarkadhish Temple and Vishram Ghat | about 2 km | 10 to 15 min |
| Mathura Junction | about 3 km | 10 to 15 min |
| Vrindavan (Banke Bihari) | about 10 km | 30 to 40 min |
| Barsana | about 42 km | about 1 hr 15 min |
| Nandgaon | about 54 km | about 1 hr 30 min |
These are normal-day times. During Holi, roads are much slower, some streets may be closed, and parking fills up quickly. Leave much earlier than you think you need to.
Some other things to look for in a room for Holi:
- Parking, if you are driving. Street parking near busy areas is hard to find during festivals.
- 24 hour check-in, since trains and roads run late during the festival season.
- A private bathroom, because you will need a proper wash after playing colours.
- Power backup and drinking water.
What to wear and carry
- Old clothes you can throw away. Colour often does not come out. White is traditional and looks great in photos, but expect it to be ruined.
- Cover your hair and skin. Many people oil their hair and skin before playing, which helps colour wash off more easily.
- Sunglasses to protect your eyes from powder.
- Comfortable shoes that you do not mind getting dirty.
- Your phone in a zip-lock bag, or better, leave it in your room. Colour and water can damage phones, and crowded lanes are not the place to hold one up.
- Very little cash and a copy of your ID. Keep valuables in your room.
Staying safe in the crowds
- Stay with your group and fix a meeting point in case you get separated.
- Hold children's hands in crowded lanes, or keep small children away from the most packed areas.
- Elders and anyone uncomfortable in crowds can enjoy Holi from a quieter spot, or visit temples on calmer days around the festival.
- Women travellers may prefer to go out in a group and avoid the most crowded spots. Leave any situation that feels uncomfortable.
- Drink water and take breaks. It is a long, tiring day.
- Be careful with food and drinks offered by strangers.
Making the most of the trip
Holi in Braj is best enjoyed over a few days rather than in one rush. Pick one or two main events, rest in between, and leave time for regular darshan too. If this is your first visit, our Mathura Vrindavan 2 day itinerary helps you see the main temples, and why stay in Mathura shows where everything is.
Where to stay
For Holi, a central base in Mathura with parking and late check-in takes a lot of stress out of the trip. Shri Govind Braj Dham is a 5 minute walk from Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, near Gate 3, with AC rooms and private bathrooms, free on-site parking and 24 hour check-in. Rooms start from ₹799 a night plus taxes, but prices change around festivals, so message us on WhatsApp with your Holi dates as early as you can.
