Barsana and Nandgaon day trip from Mathura: a simple plan

11 October 2026

Barsana and Nandgaon are two of the most important villages in Braj. Barsana is known as the home of Radha, and Nandgaon as the village of Nand Baba, Krishna's foster father. They are close to each other and both are a comfortable day trip from Mathura. This guide shows how to fit them into one day.

Barsana: the Radha Rani temple

Barsana's best known temple is the Shri Radha Rani temple, also called Ladli Ji temple, which stands on a hill above the town. The climb is by steps, and the view over the countryside from the top is lovely. For many pilgrims this is the emotional centre of a Braj yatra, since Radha is so deeply loved here.

A few things to know:

  • The climb takes effort. There are many steps. Go at your own pace and rest on the way. Elders and anyone with knee trouble should take it slowly.
  • Wear slip-on shoes. You will remove them at the temple.
  • Carry water, especially in summer.
  • Darshan timings change by season and many temples may pause darshan for a while around midday, so check locally before you plan the climb.

Nandgaon: the village of Nand Baba

Nandgaon is associated with Nand Baba, and the main temple here is also on a hill. It is a quieter place than Barsana on most days, and it pairs naturally with it. Pilgrims often visit both on the same day because the stories of Radha's Barsana and Krishna's Nandgaon are so closely linked.

Distances from Mathura

All distances are by road from Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi. Times are realistic, not best case.

PlaceDistanceRealistic time by road
Govardhanabout 22 kmabout 45 min
Barsanaabout 42 kmabout 1 hr 15 min
Nandgaonabout 54 kmabout 1 hr 30 min

Barsana and Nandgaon are near each other, so once you reach Barsana, Nandgaon is a short onward drive.

How to do both in one day

Hiring a taxi for the day is the easiest way, especially for families. Your own car works well too. Shared transport does run, but with two villages and hill temples to cover, a vehicle that waits for you saves a lot of time and energy. Agree the fare and waiting time before you start, since fares change.

A simple plan:

  1. Leave Mathura early. Aim to reach Barsana while it is still cool.
  2. Barsana first. Climb to the Radha Rani temple, have darshan, and rest before coming down.
  3. Lunch and rest. Many temples close for some time in the afternoon, so this is a good time to eat.
  4. Nandgaon next. Drive on to Nandgaon and visit the temple on the hill.
  5. Return to Mathura in the late afternoon or evening.

If you have more energy, you can stop at Govardhan on the way, since it is on the same side of Mathura. That makes for a long day, though. Many pilgrims prefer to give Govardhan its own day, especially if they want to walk the parikrama. Our Govardhan Parikrama guide explains that walk.

Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon

Barsana and Nandgaon are famous for Lathmar Holi, celebrated in the days before Holi. It recalls a playful story of Krishna and his friends from Nandgaon visiting Barsana, and the women of Barsana chasing them away with sticks (lathis). The celebration draws very large crowds, photographers and visitors from across India and abroad.

If you want to see it:

  • Dates change every year because they follow the Hindu calendar. Check the dates for your year well in advance.
  • Book your stay early. Rooms across Mathura and Vrindavan fill up quickly around Holi.
  • Expect heavy crowds and slow roads. Leave much earlier than you would on a normal day.
  • Wear old clothes and keep your phone in a zip bag.

Our guide to Holi in Mathura and Vrindavan has more on planning a Holi trip.

Tips for the day

  • Start early. Hill temples are much easier in the cool of the morning.
  • Keep your bag light: water, cash, ID, a cap or scarf, and any medicines.
  • Keep small change for prasad and shoe stands.
  • Do not try to see too much. Barsana and Nandgaon are enough for one relaxed day.

Why base yourself in Mathura

From Mathura you can reach Vrindavan, Gokul, Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon on different days and come back to the same room each night. It saves packing and unpacking, and Mathura Junction is the main railway station for the area. Our why stay in Mathura page shows all these places on a map, and the Braj yatra stay page has more on planning a longer trip.
