11 October 2026

For most pilgrims, Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi is the reason to come to Mathura. It is revered as the birthplace of Lord Krishna, and standing there is a deeply emotional moment for many families. A little preparation makes the visit calm and smooth. This guide covers what the place is, what to carry, when to go and what to see nearby.

What is Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi?

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi is the place in Mathura where Lord Krishna is believed to have been born. The complex includes the Keshav Dev temple and other shrines connected to Krishna's birth. It is in the city itself, so it is easy to reach from Mathura Junction and from anywhere in town.

Security is tight, and the complex has gates and checks at the entrance. Treat it as you would any major pilgrimage site: be patient, follow the instructions of staff, and keep your visit simple.

What to carry and what to leave

This is the part that surprises first-time visitors most.

Generally not allowed inside

Mobile phones, bags and electronics are generally not allowed inside the Janmabhoomi complex. That includes cameras, power banks, smart watches and similar items. Rules can change, so check the current rules at the gate.

Lockers near the entrance

There is a locker or cloak facility near the entrance where visitors deposit phones and bags. On busy days the queue for lockers can be long. The easiest way is to leave everything in your room and walk to the temple with only what you need.

What to take

  • A small amount of cash for prasad and offerings
  • Your ID, in case it is asked for
  • Slip-on shoes, since you will remove them
  • A handkerchief or small cloth, if you like

What to leave behind

  • Phone, camera, smart watch and power bank
  • Bags and backpacks
  • Anything valuable you will not need

If you are travelling as a group, agree on a meeting point outside before you go in, since you will not be able to call each other inside.

Best time to visit

Crowds at Janmabhoomi go up and down through the day and the year. A few general patterns:

  • Early morning is usually calmest. The queue at the entrance moves faster and the weather is cooler.
  • Weekdays are calmer than weekends and public holidays.
  • Festivals are the busiest. Janmashtami and Holi bring very heavy crowds. If you are coming for Janmashtami, read our guide to Janmashtami in Mathura.
  • The temple closes for part of the day. Darshan timings change by season and on special days, so check locally the evening before.

We do not list exact opening times here because they change. Ask at the gate or at your guest house for the current timings.

How long the visit takes

On a quiet morning, plan an hour or two for security, darshan and walking around the complex. On busy days and festivals, it can take much longer. Allow extra time if you need to use the lockers.

Tips for families

  • Older parents: go early, avoid the busiest days, and take breaks. Ask about any facilities at the gate if walking is hard.
  • Children: keep them close in the queue, and dress them in something easy to spot.
  • Dress: modest, comfortable clothes are best. Many visitors wear traditional clothes, but there is no need to dress up.
  • Heat: summers are very hot. Carry water for before and after, and rest in the afternoon.

Getting there

From Mathura Junction, Janmabhoomi is about 3 km, around 10 to 15 minutes by auto or e-rickshaw. Agree the fare before you start. If you are driving, parking close to the complex is limited on busy days, so it helps to stay somewhere with parking and walk.
