Across the Yamuna from Mathura lies a quieter side of Braj. Gokul, Raman Reti, Mahavan and Baldeo are linked with Krishna's childhood and with his elder brother Balaram. The places are close to each other and close to Mathura, so you can see them in a relaxed half day or a fuller day. This guide explains what each place is known for and how to plan the loop.
Why visit this side of the Yamuna
Most visitors to Mathura go straight to Vrindavan. That is a pity, because the places east of the river tell the early part of Krishna's story. According to tradition, after his birth in Mathura, Krishna was carried across the Yamuna to Gokul, where he grew up in the care of Nand Baba and Yashoda. The roads here are calmer, the villages feel older, and the temples are less crowded on most days.
The places, one by one
Gokul
Gokul is where Krishna is believed to have spent his childhood. For many pilgrims this is a tender visit: the stories of baby Krishna, his mischief and his mother's love all belong here. There are several temples and ghats in Gokul, and you can easily spend an hour or two walking around.
Raman Reti
Raman Reti is close to Gokul and is known for its sacred sand. Pilgrims often sit or walk barefoot on the sand, and some families like to let children play here as part of the visit. It is a peaceful stop, especially in the morning.
Mahavan
Mahavan is near Gokul and is often visited on the same trip. It is also connected with Krishna's childhood stories and has old temples worth a visit. If you are short on time, you can see Gokul and Raman Reti and keep Mahavan as an optional stop.
Baldeo (Dauji temple)
Baldeo is a little further out. It is home to the Dauji temple, dedicated to Balaram, Krishna's elder brother, who is lovingly called Dauji in Braj. It is one of the important temples of the region and makes a good final stop on a full-day loop.
Distances from Mathura
All distances are by road from Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi. Times are realistic, not best case.
| Place | Distance | Realistic time by road |
|---|---|---|
| Gokul and Raman Reti | about 13 km | about 30 min |
| Mahavan | about 16 km | about 35 min |
| Baldeo (Dauji temple) | about 28 km | about 50 min |
Half day or full day?
Half-day plan
If you have a morning or an afternoon free, visit Gokul and Raman Reti, and add Mahavan if time allows. All three are close together, and you can be back in Mathura in a few hours. This works well on the day you arrive or the day you leave.
Full-day plan
- Leave Mathura in the morning and cross the Yamuna.
- Visit Gokul and Raman Reti.
- Stop at Mahavan.
- Continue to Baldeo for darshan at the Dauji temple.
- Return to Mathura in the afternoon or evening.
Temples close for some time in the afternoon and timings change by season, so check locally and plan lunch around the break.
Getting there
A taxi or private auto for the trip is the easiest way, since the driver can wait at each stop. Your own car works well too. Shared autos and e-rickshaws do run in the area, but switching between them at each place takes more time. Fares vary, so agree the fare and any waiting time before you start.
Tips for the trip
- Go in the morning. It is cooler and the temples are calmer.
- Wear slip-on shoes, and be ready to walk barefoot on the sand at Raman Reti.
- Carry water and small change for prasad and shoe stands.
- Keep it slow. These are small, gentle places. The trip is more about atmosphere than ticking off temples.
- Combine it well. This loop fits nicely as a third day after Mathura and Vrindavan. See our Mathura Vrindavan 2 day itinerary for how to fit it in.
How it fits with the rest of Braj
Braj is spread around Mathura in every direction: Vrindavan to the north, Govardhan, Barsana and Nandgaon to the west, and Gokul, Mahavan and Baldeo to the east across the Yamuna. A base in Mathura lets you reach each of these on a different day. Our why stay in Mathura page shows them on a map, and the Govardhan Parikrama guide covers the walk on the other side of the city.
Where to stay
Gokul is about half an hour from central Mathura, so you can stay in the city and come back to the same room each night. Shri Govind Braj Dham is a 5 minute walk from Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, with AC rooms from ₹799 a night plus taxes, free parking and 24 hour check-in. See the rooms and message us on WhatsApp with your dates.
